SISTER CAROL HOBAN, SC

Sister Carol Hoban, 83, (formerly Sister Kathleen Teresa), a Sister of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, died suddenly January 12, 2025, in Jersey City, NJ, while visiting from Lake Toxaway, NC.

Sister Carol was born in Paterson, New Jersey, the daughter of Paul and Annabelle (Dunfee) Hoban. She entered the Sisters of Charity on August 20, 1959, and was a member for 65 years.

Sister Carol graduated from The College (University) of Saint Elizabeth Convent Station, New Jersey with a B.A. degree in History. She then graduated from the Hospital of St. Raphael School of Nursing, New Haven, Connecticut with a diploma in Nursing and from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA with a M.S.N. degree in Advanced Clinical Practice. She received a post graduate certificate as a Family Nurse Practitioner from the University of North Carolina, Asheville, NC, and was licensed to practice as a FNP in North Carolina.

Sister Carol served in the ministry of health care for 57 years. As a Registered Nurse, she served as Staff Nurse and Head Nurse at the Hospital of St. Raphael, New Haven CT and as Clinical Nurse Specialist at the Southern West Virginia Regional Health Council in Beckley, WV. While serving in leadership in the Northern Province of the Sisters of Charity, Sister Carol was part time Clinical Nurse Specialist/Cancer Detection Nurse at Strang Clinic: CANSCREEN, New York, NY.

Following her service as Assistant Provincial and Provincial of the Northern Province of the Sisters of Charity, Sister Carol moved to North Carolina and began more than 30 years of ministry caring for patients in a rural, underserved area. She served as Clinical Nurse Specialist and Family Nurse Practitioner at Frances Warde Health Service, Rosman, NC, a new ministry sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy. That ministry was acquired by Mercy Urgent Care in 2011 and was renamed Frances Warde Family Health and relocated to Brevard, NC. Sister Carol continued to care for her patients at the relocated facility. She  retired in September 2020 and maintained warm, caring relationships with her former patients whom she frequently met around town.

Throughout her life, Sister Carol was committed to social justice. She was a dedicated, generous, compassionate woman, who worked hard and never looked for recognition. Sister Carol accepted everyone as they are and always spoke the truth. She loved nature and enjoyed cooking and gardening.
