Obituary of Barbara Cohen
With heavy hearts we share the passing of Barbara A. Cohen. She passed peacefully on January 30th at the age of 84. She was a woman of unwavering love and strength, deeply devoted to her family.
Born in the Bronx in 1940, Barbara was one of two children to the late Rudolph and Fay (nee Horowitz) Simon. After her schooling she married Harold Cohen and they started their family. Barbara was a devoted Mother and seemed to effortlessly create beautiful memories for her family. Her home was filled with love and laughter always.
Later in life, she enrolled and graduated with a psychology degree from CUNY. This was certainly an accomplishment and one which she was always proud of. She was blessed to have a supportive family rooting her on, particularly her son in law, who was her rock and according to Barbara, was truly her son.
Her greatest joys though, came from her grandchildren. She was the proudest “Mom” to Rebecca and Sam and relished in their accomplishments. The sun rose and set on these two and there was nothing she wouldn’t do for her grandkids.
Barbara lived independently in Queens, New York until her final weeks, when she was surrounded by the care and devotion of her cherished family. We take comfort in knowing she is at peace and watching over her family with love and pride.
She leaves behind her devoted daughter Elissa Cohen Engel, and beloved son in law Craig Engel; her adored grandchildren Rebecca and Samuel; her brother and sister in law Sidney Simon and Virginia Knight and many more dear friends, relatives and neighbors.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, February 5th at 10 am at the funeral home. For those who are unable to attend in person, please join us via livestream by clicking here.
