Obituary of Sr. Joan T. Walters, SC

SISTER JOAN WALTERS Sister Joan Walters, 89, formerly Sister Robert Mary, a Sister of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, died Monday, July 24, 2023 at Saint Catherine of Siena Health Care Center, Caldwell, NJ. Sister Joan was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey, the daughter of Robert and Mary (Sehulster) Walters. She entered the Sisters of Charity on April 2, 1951, and was a member for 72 years. Sister Joan graduated from the College of Saint Elizabeth, Convent Station, New Jersey with a B.A. degree in Social Studies and an M.A. degree in Elementary Education from Seton Hall University, South Orange. She earned an M.A. degree in Education of the Deaf at Columbia University, New York. and later graduated with an EdD in Special Education from Columbia University. Sister Joan served in the Ministry of Education in New Jersey as a teacher at Saint Joseph School, Newark; Immaculate Conception School, Darlington; Holy Cross School, Harrison; Saint Margaret of Scotland School, Morristown and Our Lady of Mount Carmel School, Tenafly. She was the Director of the CCD program in the Apostolate for the Deaf for Mount Carmel Guild in Newark, N.J. She also was an Assistant Professor and Chair for the Department of Education at the College of Saint Elizabeth, Convent Station. Sister Joan also served as an Administrative Assistant, Project Director and Academic Director at Saint Augustine School, Union City. Sister Joan was a gentle presence always greeting you with a warm smile. Her ministry in the Apostolate for the Deaf reflected the Gospel as lived by Jesus in his ministry. Her daily ritual of reading the New York Times was shared with those sisters with whom she lived and continued while she was at Saint Catherine of Siena Health Care Center. Sister Joan will be missed by the Sisters of Charity and her family and friends. In addition, she will be missed by the people of Saint Augustine's Parish with whom she shared daily a rosary and the Mass. Sister Joan was predeceased by her sister Mary and brothers Bob, Jim, Tom, George and Marty. She is survived by her dear friends and family, Sister Johanna Quinto and Sister Lillian Sharrock, the Sisters of Charity, friends and family and many nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. The wake for Sister Joan Walters will be held in Holy Family Chapel, 2 Convent Road, Convent Station, NJ from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 2, 2023. The Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery, Convent Station immediately following the Mass. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Steven J. Priola Funeral Services, Parsippany, NJ. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Sisters of Charity Development Fund, P.O.
